Quick answer
Direct Current (DC) is electric current that flows in one direction only, at a steady polarity, the kind produced by solar cells and stored in batteries.
Every solar system starts in DC: each panel pushes current one way from its positive to its negative terminal. Because homes and the grid run on alternating current, the DC has to pass through an inverter before you can use it or export it.

Key takeaways
- DC flows one way at a steady voltage. Panels and battery cells both work in DC.
- Your home runs on AC, so an inverter converts the DC.
- “kW DC” on a quote is the panels’ total lab rating.
- DC wiring on a roof stays live in daylight, even with the main breaker off.
- DC-coupled batteries charge straight from panels and skip one conversion.
One direction, no cycles
DOE describes DC as current that runs in a single direction, like the output of a battery or fuel cell. Its solar office adds that in DC, electricity is kept at a constant voltage in one direction. Nothing alternates, so there is no frequency. A DC meter just reads a voltage and a current.
DC is having a quiet comeback. Solar cells, LEDs, computers and electric vehicles all work on DC inside. High-voltage DC lines now move bulk power over long distances. The home grid is still alternating current, which is why conversion sits at the center of every solar design.
How solar panels make DC
A solar cell has a built-in electric field. When light frees electrons, the field pushes them out one side of the cell, always the same way. That one-way push is DC.
Cells are wired in a row inside the panel, so their voltages add. Panels are then joined into strings that add again. The Qcells 425 W panel works at about 32.74 V and 12.98 A. Eight in a row work at about 262 V DC.
The inverter then flips the DC back and forth very fast, the DOE explains, to make AC.
Which parts of a solar home are DC
| Component | DC or AC | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Panels and the wiring between them | DC | Live whenever light falls on them |
| String to a wall-mounted inverter | DC | Can be several hundred volts |
| Microinverter input | DC | Panel voltage only; the IQ8M accepts up to 60 V 4 |
| Battery cells | DC | Powerwall 3 holds 13.5 kWh, delivered as AC through its inverter 3 |
| Inverter output, panel, outlets | AC | After the conversion |
Types of DC design in home solar
| Design | How much DC | Best known for |
|---|---|---|
| String inverter | Long DC runs from roof to one inverter | Simple roofs, one unit to service |
| String + optimizers | DC runs, managed panel by panel | Partial shade, panel-level data |
| Microinverters | DC only between panel and its inverter | Low DC voltage on the roof |
| DC-coupled battery | Panels feed battery in DC | Fewer conversions for stored solar |
| Off-grid | DC to a charge controller and battery | Cabins and remote sites |
Example: reading kW DC on a quote
A proposal lists "6.8 kW DC" and a Powerwall 3. The figures come from the two data sheets; the multiplication is ours.
| Item | Math | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Panels | 16 × 425 W (Qcells STC rating) 5 | 6,800 W = 6.8 kW DC |
| String voltage at max power (two strings of 8) | 8 × 32.74 V 5 | ≈ 262 V DC each |
| Inverter DC tracking window | Powerwall 3 MPPT range 3 | 60–480 V DC: fits |
| AC output limit | Powerwall 3 continuous 3 | 11.5 kW AC |
The kW DC number sets price per watt; the kW AC number is what the inverter can send to the house. In a DC-coupled design like this one, solar can charge the battery without first being turned into AC, which avoids one conversion loss (see round-trip efficiency).
DC vs AC at a glance
| Direct current (DC) | Alternating current (AC) | |
|---|---|---|
| Direction | One way | Flips back and forth |
| Frequency | None | 60 Hz in the US |
| In a solar home | Panels, strings, battery cells | Inverter output, outlets, grid |
| Rating on a quote | kW DC | kW AC |
| Shutdown | Stays live in daylight | Off when the breaker is off |
DC-coupled storage: what it does and does not buy you
Advantages
- Solar charges the battery directly in DC, skipping a DC→AC→DC round trip.
- One hybrid inverter can serve both panels and battery.
- Tesla lists Powerwall 3 at 97.5% from solar to home and 89% from solar to battery to home 3.
Limits
- Adding a battery to an existing system usually means AC coupling instead.
- The inverter's DC input limits cap how much solar can be attached.
Limits of DC in a home
DC cannot plug into your outlets. It always needs an inverter, and each conversion loses a little energy as heat.
Shade is a bigger issue on the DC side than many buyers expect. In a series string, the same current flows through every panel.
If one panel is shaded, it can hold back the rest of the string. Panel-level electronics reduce that loss, at the cost of more parts on the roof. Our shade guide explains the trade-off.
DC voltage also has hard ceilings. The Qcells panel is rated for a 1,000 V system at most.
Powerwall 3 is limited to 600 V DC, and its solar input works between 60 and 550 V.
A designer must keep each string inside those limits on the coldest day, since voltage rises in the cold. See voltage.
How DC drives cost
Installers price most systems per watt of DC. So kW DC is the number your quote is built on. The price per watt guide explains how to compare quotes that way.
DC parts that add cost: panels, rails, DC wire and connectors, rapid-shutdown devices, DC disconnects, and optimizers or microinverters. A battery adds its own inverter or a hybrid inverter. We do not list prices.
Lifespans differ. Qcells warrants its panels for 25 years and at least 90.58% of power at year 25 5. Tesla lists 25 years on its solar shutdown devices and 10 years on Powerwall 3 3.
How the DC side is installed
- The designer sets string lengths from panel voltage and the area’s record low.
- Plans show DC wiring, rapid-shutdown gear and disconnects for the permit.
- A licensed crew mounts panels and runs DC wire in approved conduit.
- A licensed electrician tests string voltage and polarity before connecting the inverter.
- An inspector checks DC labels, grounding and rapid shutdown; the utility then approves the connection.
Keeping DC output near rated
Most DC upkeep is about light and connections. Keep panels clear of heavy dirt, leaves and new shade. Our guide on cleaning solar panels covers when it helps.
Connectors and DC cables can wear from heat, sun and animals. Squirrels chewing wire is a common cause of faults. Your installer can inspect the array and add critter guards. Do not touch DC wiring yourself.
Use your monitoring to spot DC problems early. Panel-level systems show each panel’s output, so one weak panel stands out. With a string inverter, a whole string may drop at once.
Compare clear-day output with the same month last year, since panels lose a little power each year. Qcells allows no more than 0.33% a year after the first year 5. A bigger drop is a reason to book a service visit.
Why DC wiring is left to professionals
- Faulty DC connectors can arc and start fires; Powerwall 3 includes an arc fault circuit interrupter to detect this 3.
- You cannot switch panels off by turning off the main breaker; they stay energized in daylight.
- OSHA lists shock, electrocution and fire among electrical hazards.
- Warning signs: arc-fault or ground-fault alarms, chewed cables, scorch marks. Call a licensed electrician or solar installer.
Standards and codes for the DC side
Panels. The Qcells sheet lists UL 61730 and IEC 61215:2021 and IEC 61730:2023, and a 1,000 V maximum system voltage.
Rapid shutdown. NFPA 70, the National Electrical Code, Article 690, requires PV rapid shutdown, which lowers rooftop DC voltage for firefighters. Tesla states its solar shutdown device is part of this function under Article 690. See rapid shutdown.
Enforcement. Your local building department enforces the code edition it has adopted. Ask your installer which one applies.
Common myths about DC
- Myth "Turning off the main breaker makes the roof safe."
- Reality Panels make DC whenever light hits them.
- Myth "Low-voltage DC from one panel is harmless, so strings are too."
- Reality Strings add voltage to hundreds of volts.
- Myth "kW DC is what my home gets."
- Reality Your home gets AC after losses. kW DC is the panels’ lab rating.
DC work in SC, GA and VA
In South Carolina, a "Solar Panel Installer" is a Residential Specialty registration with SC LLR that covers fitting and installing panels and related parts; wiring and connection need a Residential Builder, a licensed residential electrician or a mechanical contractor with the electrical classification 8.
The 2021 state codes are in force 7. In Georgia and Virginia, check your county or city for licensing and code edition.
When DC matters to you
- Comparing quotes: use kW DC for price per watt.
- Adding a battery: ask if it will be DC- or AC-coupled.
- Shady roof: ask about microinverters or optimizers.
- Older system: ask for a DC wiring and connector check.

Questions about direct current
Is solar power AC or DC?
Solar panels generate DC. An inverter converts it to AC for your home and the grid, either in one central box or in microinverters behind each panel. The DC never reaches your outlets.
What is DC power used for in a home?
Most electronics, LED lighting and EV batteries run on DC internally, using adapters or chargers that convert the AC from your outlets. Solar panels and home batteries also work in DC.
What does kW DC mean on a solar quote?
It is the panels' combined rating at standard test conditions: panel count times panel watts. It is usually higher than the inverter's kW AC output by design. Installers price per watt of DC.
Are home batteries DC?
Battery cells store DC. Many home batteries include an inverter so they connect to the house in AC; Tesla lists Powerwall 3's 13.5 kWh capacity in AC terms. Some systems charge the battery straight from panel DC.
Can I turn off the DC from my panels?
Not fully. Panels make DC whenever light hits them. Rapid shutdown lowers the voltage in rooftop wiring for safety, but panels themselves stay live. Leave any DC work to a licensed electrician or installer.
How high is the DC voltage on a home system?
With a string inverter, often a few hundred volts. Eight 425 W Qcells panels in series work at about 262 V DC. Panels are rated for up to 1,000 V, while Powerwall 3 is limited to 600 V DC.
Is DC or AC more efficient for solar?
Neither alone. Panels make DC and homes use AC, so a conversion is needed. Losses are small, about 2.5% for good inverters. DC-coupled batteries avoid one extra conversion when storing solar.
Why does my quote show kW DC higher than kW AC?
Panels rarely hit their lab rating on a roof, so designers often pair them with a smaller inverter. This DC-to-AC ratio catches most of the energy at lower cost, with a little clipping at peak hours.
