What does a site assessment check on a Greer home?

Three things decide a Greer design before shading even comes up. The first is your utility: Greer CPW says its service area is primarily the city limits plus nearby unincorporated areas, so homes on the edges of Greer may be on another utility with different rules.

The second is your electrical service rating, because CPW will not accept an array whose AC rating exceeds 90% of it without you paying for an upgrade. The third is roof age.

Greer’s housing is relatively young, with a median build year of 2002 in the 2023 American Community Survey, so many roofs are on their first or second shingle layer.

A roof that is already 20 or more years old may need replacing during the array’s life, and removing and reinstalling panels later adds cost. Should you re-roof first?

How is a Greer system designed and engineered?

Design starts from usage, not roof space. On Greer CPW’s Rate 750, energy you use yourself is worth more than twice the off-peak export credit, so designers aim to cover daytime load rather than produce a large annual surplus.

Orientation matters slightly differently here than on Duke: CPW’s on-peak window is 1–9 p.m. on summer weekdays and 6 a.m.–1 p.m. on winter weekdays, so a west-leaning array earns the higher on-peak credit for more of its summer exports.

Engineering covers roof attachments, wire sizing and the single-line diagram the permit office needs. The equipment must meet IEEE 1547 and UL 1741, and the inverter must stop exporting when CPW’s grid goes down, which CPW states in its agreement. Size a system.

Who issues the solar permit in Greer?

Inside city limits, the City of Greer Planning & Development department issues building permits through its eTRAKiT portal.

The fee follows the City’s Comprehensive Fee Schedule, effective 1 July 2025: for construction value between $15,000 and $50,000, $150 for the first $15,000 plus $5.50 for each further $1,000, with a 3% technology fee on top. Fee examples are on solar cost in Greer.

Greer sits across two counties, and unincorporated addresses with a Greer mailing address are permitted by Greenville County or Spartanburg County, not the City. Your installer should confirm which office before scheduling. The 2021 South Carolina Building Codes apply statewide, and the 2024 IRC is scheduled for local implementation from 1 January 2027.

How does Greer CPW interconnection work?

CPW’s application covers customer-owned renewable generation in two tiers: Tier 1 for residential systems of 20 kW or less ($100 fee) and Tier 2 for non-residential systems of 100 kW or less ($250).

Along with the fee, CPW wants proof of IEEE 1547, IEEE 1547.1 and UL 1741 compliance, evidence of local code inspection, and proof of liability insurance: a homeowner’s policy with at least $100,000 per occurrence for a home.

There are three agreements, not one. The Standard Interconnection Agreement covers safety and connection.

A Tri-Party Net Billing Power Purchase Agreement between you, CPW and the Piedmont Municipal Power Agency covers how your excess energy is bought, because PMPA, not CPW, purchases it. Your rate moves to code 750.

Changing the system later needs a new application 30 days ahead; adding a second system needs 60 days’ written notice. How interconnection works.

What happens on installation day in Greer?

Crews mount racking, set the panels, run conduit and fit the inverter.

The Greer-specific item is the manual disconnect: CPW requires a visible load-break switch on an outside wall next to the meter, mounted separately from the meter socket, which CPW staff can reach and lock open.

If the switch is not where CPW wants it, the go-ahead waits.

After the code inspection passes, your installer sends CPW the inspection documentation and the ten-business-day notice of your in-service date. CPW may send someone on the day. Do not switch the system on until CPW confirms in writing. What permission to operate means.

What can delay a Greer solar installation?

The usual causes are an incomplete CPW application (missing insurance certificate or equipment listing), a design that exceeds 90% of the service rating and triggers an upgrade, a permit sent to the wrong office for an unincorporated address, a failed inspection, and a disconnect switch in the wrong place.

Each of these is avoidable if the installer has done CPW work before; ask them how many times.

Roof replacements also stall projects. Greenville County logged 84 hail reports from 2015 to 2025 in NOAA’s Storm Events Database, and a storm claim can put a re-roof ahead of the solar job.

What electrical work and battery options affect a Greer install?

CPW’s 90% rule ties array size directly to your service. A home on a smaller service may need an upgrade before a larger array is allowed, and CPW’s agreement puts that cost on the customer. Ask for the service rating to be stated in the proposal. Panel upgrade check.

A battery adds a critical-loads panel or a whole-home transfer switch and more inspection items. Because Rate 750 bills energy on flat tiers, a Greer battery is mainly a backup decision; see battery storage in Greer.

What should a Greer installation quote include, and how do you prepare?

The quote should list the City or county permit fee, CPW’s $100 Tier 1 fee, the disconnect switch, any service upgrade, and who files each document. Installation cost itself varies by company; compare quotes on solar installers in Greer. For state-level background see installers in South Carolina.

To prepare, have your CPW account number ready (the application asks for it), find twelve months of bills, get a certificate from your home insurer showing liability cover, and clear access to the meter wall for the disconnect.

Questions

How long does Greer CPW take to approve a solar connection?
CPW’s agreement says it will sign within 30 calendar days of a complete application, subject to inspection, and send written permission to operate within five business days of receiving your documents and seeing the disconnect switch work.
Do I need to tell Greer CPW before turning my solar system on?
Yes. You must give CPW written notice at least ten business days before the in-service date, and CPW may send staff on that day.
How big can a solar system be on Greer CPW?
Tier 1 covers residential systems of 20 kW or less. The AC rating, calculated as DC capacity × 0.85, also may not exceed 90% of your electrical service rating unless you pay for an upgrade.
Where do I get a solar permit if I live outside Greer city limits?
From Greenville County or Spartanburg County, depending on which county your address is in. The City of Greer only permits work inside city limits.
Does Greer CPW require a disconnect switch for solar?
Yes. A visible load-break manual disconnect mounted on an outside wall next to the meter, separate from the meter socket, where CPW can reach and lock it.
What insurance does Greer CPW require for home solar?
A standard homeowner’s policy with at least $100,000 of liability cover per occurrence, kept for as long as the system is connected.

Primary-source research, data analysis and fact checking

We are a research desk, not a sales floor. We read the statute, the tariff, the code section, the federal filing or the manufacturer data sheet ourselves, and we publish the figure with the document it came from and the date we retrieved it.

Where a number cannot be traced to a primary source, we publish the shorter page and say what we could not verify. That rule has cost us whole sections, and it is why the rest can be checked.

How this desk works

  • Primary sources only. Statutes from the legislature’s own publishing system, federal data from the agency that collects it, code text from the adopted edition, manufacturer claims from the data sheet. We do not cite an article that cites a source; we go and read the source.
  • Every figure carries its provenance. A named document and the date we retrieved it, so you can check it and so you know how old it is. Retrieval dates are not decoration: an EIA rate from May is a different fact from an EIA rate from August.
  • We publish what we could not verify. Every research page carries a section naming the things we tried to establish and could not, and why. A paywalled standard, a state website that refused the request, a manufacturer that publishes no figure at all.
  • We separate measurement from modeling from our own reasoning, and label which is which on the page. A laboratory measurement, an assumption inside a modeling tool and our own inference are three different kinds of claim and they are never presented as one.
  • We do not sell solar, and we take no payment for placement, ranking or a favorable mention. Nobody buys a position on this site.
