How the Myrtle Beach installation market is shaped

Two things set Myrtle Beach apart from other South Carolina cities. Santee Cooper, not Dominion or Duke, writes the export rules, so installers who mostly work Dominion’s Solar Choice rider in Charleston or Duke’s in the Upstate may bring the wrong savings model.

And Santee Cooper runs its own installer network tied to its rebate, so the installer choice and the incentive are linked.

The customer base is unusual too. In the 2020–2024 American Community Survey, 17.3% of the city’s homes were held for seasonal or occasional use and 40% were in buildings of five or more units. Expect installers to ask early whether you live in the home year-round and whether an association controls the roof.

Types of installers working in Myrtle Beach

You will meet three broad kinds: local or regional solar contractors who do the work with their own crews; national or regional sales companies that sell the job and subcontract installation; and electrical or roofing contractors who add solar to their trade.

Any of them can be competent. What matters for a Santee Cooper home is who is on the Trade Ally list, who signs the NABCEP letter, and who actually holds the licences for each part of the work.

Ask door-to-door sellers which company will be on the permit. Who actually installs your solar.

What a qualified Myrtle Beach installer provides

On a City of Myrtle Beach job, a qualified installer handles the Rebate Reservation Worksheet and the $100 Santee Cooper interconnection request, commissions the sealed engineering and the roof structural analysis, submits building and electrical permits to Construction Services, schedules inspections, supplies the notarized letter the City requires at final inspection, and files the rebate application within 90 days of installation.

If they will not take on the rebate paperwork, ask why.

Sizing should start from your Santee Cooper interval data, not a rule of thumb: the system may not exceed the lesser of 20 kW or your estimated maximum monthly demand, and the rebate stops at 6 kW AC.

Licences, certifications and insurance to check in Myrtle Beach

South Carolina splits solar work across several credentials. The City’s permit application asks for both a City licence number and a State licence number for the contractor.

Panels and their components

"Solar Panel Installer" is a Residential Specialty registration with the Residential Builders Commission (SC LLR): fabricating, assembling, installing and replacing panels and related components.

Roof attachments

Roof mounting: a Residential Builder, a Residential Specialty Contractor with the Roofer classification, or a General Contractor with a roofing classification.

Wiring and connection

Wiring and connection: a Residential Builder, a licensed residential electrician, or a mechanical contractor with the electrical classification.

Structural roof work, if any

Structural roof upgrades: a Residential Builder, a Residential Specialty Contractor with the Carpenter classification, or a General Contractor with building or structural framing.

NABCEP certification

Santee Cooper’s rebate needs a letter from a NABCEP-certified PV installation professional who inspected the system. Ask for the person’s name and check it on nabcep.org.

City business licence and insurance

The City permit form asks for a City licence number. Ask for liability and workers’ compensation certificates naming the company on the contract.

Verify each licence yourself on SC LLR. How to verify a licence.

How installers size and price solar for a Santee Cooper home

Because exports earn only 4.15¢/kWh, an installer who sizes a Myrtle Beach system to cancel your entire annual usage is selling you surplus at a low price.

The better proposals size to daytime use, show the hour-by-hour split between self-use and export, and say whether west-facing panels or a battery are proposed to lower the RG-25 demand charge, $8.00 per kW for your highest hour between 3 and 6 p.m. from April to October.

Pricing is per project. We do not publish a local price per watt. Compare proposals on the same scope and see Myrtle Beach solar cost for the fixed fees and worked examples.

Myrtle Beach quote-comparison checklist

Put three written quotes side by side and check each line.

System size in kW DC and kW AC

The rebate is paid on AC watts, up to 6 kW.

Module, inverter and racking make and model

With UL 2703, UL 62109 or UL 1741, and UL 1703 listings as the City requires.

Savings model

Hourly DG-25 netting at 4.15¢ for exports, the $10 monthly rider charge, and the RG-25 demand charge.

Rebate handling

Trade Ally status confirmed in writing; who files, by what date; who pays if it is missed.

Permits, engineering and the notarized letter

Included in the price, not extras.

Roof work and future removal

Any re-roof, and the price to remove and reinstall the array later.

Warranties

Panel product and output, inverter, and the installer’s own workmanship warranty, each with its length.

Cash price and financed price

If they differ, the gap is a dealer fee.

Warranties, equipment and batteries from a Myrtle Beach installer

Manufacturer warranties cover panels and inverters; only the installer covers roof penetrations and wiring. On a coastal roof exposed to salt air and frequent wind, the workmanship warranty and whether the company will still be around to honour it matter as much as the panel brand. What a workmanship warranty covers.

If a battery is offered, ask what it is meant to do on a Santee Cooper bill, since its value here is shaving the 3–6 p.m. demand and storing midday surplus, plus outage backup. See Myrtle Beach battery storage. For loans and dealer fees, see Myrtle Beach solar financing.

Red flags in Myrtle Beach solar sales

“Net metering will wipe out your bill”

Santee Cooper says it does not offer one-to-one net metering.

Claiming the federal tax credit for a 2026 home system

The IRS says §25D "is not available for any property placed in service after December 31, 2025."

A power purchase agreement

South Carolina does not permit third-party sales of power from panels on your property.

Pressure to sign the same day

You can cancel a door-to-door contract until midnight of the third business day after signing, by written notice (SC Code §37-2-502).

A rebate promised without Trade Ally status

Ask to see it confirmed by Santee Cooper.

Santee Cooper interconnection and the installer’s role

Santee Cooper does not install solar itself. The installer submits your interconnection package through DocuSign: proof of home liability insurance, the application, an electrical diagram and the module and inverter data sheets.

A decision comes within 10 business days, and the City then accepts the approved request at plan review. After the City’s final inspection, Santee Cooper runs final acceptance testing before the system may operate.

Questions

How do I find a Santee Cooper approved solar installer in Myrtle Beach?
Ask Santee Cooper for its Solar Electric Trade Ally list at solar@santeecooper.com or (843) 347-3399. Santee Cooper says Trade Ally status is not an endorsement, so check licences and references yourself.
Does my installer have to be a Trade Ally?
Only if you want the Solar Home rebate. Without a Trade Ally installation and a NABCEP professional’s letter, the rebate of up to $5,700 is lost.
What licence does a solar installer need in South Carolina?
A Solar Panel Installer registration with the Residential Builders Commission covers the panels; roof mounting and wiring need their own licences or classifications. Check each on SC LLR.
Should a Myrtle Beach solar quote assume net metering?
No. Santee Cooper nets hourly and credits exports at 4.15¢/kWh. A quote that assumes full retail credit for exports overstates savings.
Can I cancel a solar contract signed at my door in Myrtle Beach?
Yes. South Carolina lets you cancel a home-solicitation sale until midnight of the third business day after signing, in writing.
Does HyreSolar recommend specific installers in Myrtle Beach?
No. We do not rank or name installers. Use the checklist on this page to compare the quotes you get.

Primary-source research, data analysis and fact checking

We are a research desk, not a sales floor. We read the statute, the tariff, the code section, the federal filing or the manufacturer data sheet ourselves, and we publish the figure with the document it came from and the date we retrieved it.

Where a number cannot be traced to a primary source, we publish the shorter page and say what we could not verify. That rule has cost us whole sections, and it is why the rest can be checked.

How this desk works

  • Primary sources only. Statutes from the legislature’s own publishing system, federal data from the agency that collects it, code text from the adopted edition, manufacturer claims from the data sheet. We do not cite an article that cites a source; we go and read the source.
  • Every figure carries its provenance. A named document and the date we retrieved it, so you can check it and so you know how old it is. Retrieval dates are not decoration: an EIA rate from May is a different fact from an EIA rate from August.
  • We publish what we could not verify. Every research page carries a section naming the things we tried to establish and could not, and why. A paywalled standard, a state website that refused the request, a manufacturer that publishes no figure at all.
  • We separate measurement from modeling from our own reasoning, and label which is which on the page. A laboratory measurement, an assumption inside a modeling tool and our own inference are three different kinds of claim and they are never presented as one.
  • We do not sell solar, and we take no payment for placement, ranking or a favorable mention. Nobody buys a position on this site.

Data as of Last verified 5 October 2026. Authorship on this site is organizational: the analysis belongs to the desk rather than to a named individual, and we do not publish credentials we do not hold. Our editorial policy sets out how we source, date and correct what we publish.
