Solar PV vs Solar Water Heater: Which Is Right for Your Home

Quick answer

Solar PV vs Solar Water Heater comes down to upfront cost, lifetime savings and how long you plan to stay in the home; here is each factor side by side.

Solar PV panels make electricity that can run anything in the house, including an electric or heat pump water heater, and exports to the grid can earn credit.

A solar water heater (solar thermal) uses roof collectors to heat water directly; ENERGY STAR says it can cut annual hot water costs in half, and it works with gas or electric backup, so it offsets whichever fuel you use now.

PV is the flexible, whole-house choice; solar thermal is a narrower tool that makes most sense with high hot-water use and limited roof space.

Start with what heats your water today

In EIA’s 2020 Residential Energy Consumption Survey (table HC8.1), natural gas was the main water-heating fuel in about 59 million US homes and electricity in about 57 million, with smaller numbers on propane and fuel oil. That split matters here.

If you heat water with gas or propane, PV cannot touch that bill unless you also switch to an electric water heater. A solar water heater offsets gas directly, because its backup is your existing gas heater.

If you heat water with electricity, PV offsets it along with everything else, and pairing PV with a heat pump water heater cuts the electricity the water heater needs in the first place.

That pairing is the main reason solar thermal has become a niche product: it gives similar results with one technology on the roof instead of two.

Savings over 25 years

A solar water heater’s ceiling is your hot-water bill. ENERGY STAR’s figure is that it can cut annual hot water costs in half, so a household with a large hot-water load (big family, frequent laundry) gains the most, and a small household gains little. Every dollar it saves comes off one end use.

PV’s ceiling is your whole electricity bill, minus fixed charges, plus any export credit. Under net metering, surplus summer output offsets winter use; under net billing, self-consumption matters more and shifting water heating into solar hours with a timer or heat pump water heater adds value (see net metering vs net billing).

Neither gets a federal tax credit for a homeowner who buys in 2026. Section 25D covered both solar electric and solar water heating, and it ended for expenditures after December 31, 2025.

Unlike leased PV, a leased solar water heater cannot carry the Section 48E business credit: the law excludes property described in Section 25D(d)(1), which is solar water heating.

Check state and utility rebates, which still exist for some water-heating equipment, with the incentive finder.

Which to choose if…

  1. 1
You want to cut the whole electric bill

Solar PV. It powers every load and can grow with an EV or heat pump.

  2. 2
You heat water with gas, use a lot of hot water and have a small sunny roof area

A solar water heater offsets gas directly with fewer square feet than PV would need to do the same job.

  3. 3
    You heat water with electricity

PV plus a heat pump water heater is usually simpler than adding collectors.

  4. 4
    Your winters freeze hard

If you choose thermal, insist on a closed-loop antifreeze or drain-back design, never a batch system.

Questions

Is a solar water heater better than solar panels?
Only for one job: heating water, especially gas-heated water in a high-use home. Solar panels power the whole house and are the more flexible investment.
Can solar panels heat my water?
Yes, by powering an electric or heat pump water heater. They cannot offset a gas water heater unless you switch it to electric.
How much does a solar water heater save?
ENERGY STAR says a solar water heater can cut annual hot water costs in half. Your saving depends on how much hot water you use and what fuel it replaces.
Is there a tax credit for a solar water heater in 2026?
Not federally for homeowners: Section 25D ended for expenditures after December 31, 2025. State or utility rebates may apply.
Do solar water heaters work in cold climates?
Yes, with the right design. ENERGY STAR recommends a closed-loop antifreeze or drain-back system where temperatures may fall below 42°F and advises against batch systems in climates with distinct winters.
