Solar Lease Buyout Cost: What You Will Pay in 2026
Written by HyreSolar Research Desk Price compilation from published, dated sources
The short answer
Solar Lease Buyout Cost depends mainly on how many years remain on the contract, the buyout formula it uses and the system's size, and this page gives the range from dated, sourced figures.
Across 14 published, dated sources retrieved October 22, 2026, a buyout runs $9,000–$25,000; early-contract buyouts sit at the top of that range and final-years buyouts far below it.
Your contract's buyout schedule is the binding number; get it in writing. No 30% federal credit applies to a system a homeowner buys: Section 25D ended for expenditures after December 31, 2025 (what changed).

What moves a lease buyout price
Years remaining move the price most. Sources that break buyouts down by contract year show the price falling steeply as the term runs out, because most formulas are built from what the lessor still expects to collect. A buyout in year three and one in year eighteen on the same system are different transactions.
The formula comes next, and it is written in your contract. The common ones are a fixed schedule of buyout prices at set milestones, fair market value from an appraisal, or the present value of the remaining payments; some contracts say whichever is higher.
A present-value formula can price an early buyout above what the system cost to install, and one reported California quote did exactly that. Many leases also bar a buyout in the first years of the term.
Why you are buying out matters too. A home sale puts the buyout on a closing deadline and adds lien release and escrow steps; a homeowner who simply wants to own the output can wait for a cheaper milestone.
Once you own the system, repairs, inverter replacement and insurance become yours (inverter replacement cost).
Buyout against the alternatives
| Option | Read | What to compare |
|---|---|---|
| Keep paying to term | Solar lease cost | Sum of remaining payments with the escalator against the buyout quote. |
| Buy out and keep the system | Repair · Inverter | Ownership moves maintenance and inverter risk to you. |
| Buy out and replace with new panels | Installation cost | A new system's installed price is the benchmark for an aging one. |
| Transfer the lease to a buyer | Ownership guides | Buyer credit approval and timing against the closing date. |
How to check a quote
- 1Get the payoff figure in writing, with the formula
Ask which method set the number (schedule, fair market value or present value) and how long the quote is valid.
- 2Add up the remaining payments yourself
Remaining months times the current payment, stepped up by the escalator each year. A buyout well above that sum needs an explanation.
- 3Check what transfers with the system
Production guarantee, monitoring, remaining manufacturer warranties and the lien release (UCC termination) should all be named.
- 4Compare with a new-system quote
Price a new system on gross cost per watt with the proposal analyzer before paying top dollar for an older one.
