Best Solar Inverters
Written by HyreSolar Research Desk Primary-source research and fact checking
Quick answer
Best Solar Inverters are ranked here on a published method using certified specifications and warranty terms, with no paid placement.
The ranking is not published yet. The inverter is the part of a solar system most likely to need replacing within its life, so the warranty and the certified efficiency matter more than the brand name.
Until every figure is verified from the California Energy Commission’s inverter list and each maker’s datasheet and warranty, and the method is signed off, this page sets out the test so you can use it on your own quotes.
Cost side by side
Installed prices as other publishers state them, gross of incentives. Each range is the median published low to the median published high across at least 12 dated sources, retrieved October 21–22, 2026; the source rows sit on the linked cost page.
| Option | Published range | Sources |
|---|---|---|
| Inverter replacement, installed | $1,200–$2,900 | 12 dated |
No 30% federal credit is subtracted: Section 25D ended for expenditures after December 31, 2025.
The selection method: what we score and where it comes from
| Criterion | Field we read | Primary source | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|---|
| Eligibility | Listed as a grid-support inverter (UL 1741 SB) | CEC Solar Equipment List | Required for interconnection in many utilities; unlisted inverters are excluded |
| Certified efficiency | CEC weighted efficiency | CEC Solar Equipment List | One test method for every listed inverter, unlike the peak figures on brochures |
| Warranty length | Standard years and extension terms | Manufacturer warranty document | String inverters often carry shorter standard warranties than microinverters; check both |
| Warranty terms | Labor reimbursement, registration conditions, transferability | Manufacturer warranty document | Decides who pays for the replacement visit |
| Rapid shutdown | Compliance method for NEC 690.12 | Datasheet | Module-level devices or a listed rapid-shutdown system are needed on most roofs |
| Battery compatibility | Native battery support or AC-coupling only | Datasheet | Decides how cheaply storage can be added later |
| Monitoring | Module-level or system-level data | Datasheet | Module-level data finds a failed panel without a site visit |
Weights will be published with the first ranking. Architecture (string, micro, optimizer) is not scored: it is a design choice covered on its own page.
Why the efficiency numbers on proposals cannot be compared
Brochures quote peak efficiency, CEC weighted efficiency or European weighted efficiency, sometimes without saying which.
Only the CEC weighted figure is measured the same way for every listed inverter, so it is the one we score.
Differences between listed residential inverters are usually a percentage point or two; a warranty that is five years shorter is usually the bigger risk.
Architecture is a separate decision. Microinverters and optimizers help on shaded or multi-face roofs and give module-level monitoring; a string inverter is one box that is cheaper to replace. See microinverter vs string inverter.
How to apply the method to your own quotes
- 1Get the exact inverter model
Brands sell several lines with different warranties.
- 2Check the CEC inverter list
Confirm the listing and note the weighted efficiency.
- 3Read the warranty document
Note years, whether labor is reimbursed and what registration is required.
- 4Ask how rapid shutdown is met
It changes what is on your roof.
- 5Plan for one replacement
Use the inverter replacement planner to budget it.
