Solar Shingles vs Solar Panels: Which Is Right for Your Home

Quick answer

Solar Shingles vs Solar Panels comes down to upfront cost, lifetime savings and how long you plan to stay in the home; here is each factor side by side.

Panels make more power from the same roof area and cost less per watt, so they win on savings almost everywhere.

Solar shingles only make sense when you need a new roof anyway and want the array to be the roof.

Read from the two makers' data sheets, a shingle produces about two-thirds of a modern panel's output per square foot and loses more output in the heat.

Cost side by side

A panel quote and a shingle quote are not priced on the same thing. A panel quote is the solar system on the roof you already have.

A shingle quote includes a roof: tear-off, underlayment, the non-solar shingles around the active area and the solar shingles themselves.

The only fair comparison is a shingle roof against a new conventional roof plus panels for the same house.

We print a range only when at least 12 dated, comparable published prices exist.

Panels clear that bar; solar shingles do not yet, so the shingle sources are listed on the solar shingles cost page without a computed range.

Ask any shingle installer to split the quote into roofing area and active solar kW, then compare the solar part per watt against a panel quote.

Savings over 25 years

Savings follow kilowatt-hours, and kilowatt-hours follow watts per square foot. On the data sheets above, a roof plane covered in panels carries roughly half again as much rated power as the same plane in solar shingles.

On a roof where space is the limit, that gap is the whole story: the panel system makes more electricity every year for 25 years.

Heat widens it. Module output falls as cells warm. The shingle sheet lists −0.39% of rated power per °C and the panel sheet −0.29%.

A shingle lies flat on the deck with little air behind it, while a panel sits on rails with an air gap; NREL's PVWatts model assumes a hotter cell for roof-mounted modules for that reason.

In a hot summer the shingle loses more of an already smaller output.

Where shingles claw some of it back is the roof itself. If your roof needs replacing now, the shingle roof pays for a roof covering you would buy anyway, and you avoid a later removal and reinstall when the roof under a panel array wears out.

Run your own numbers in the roof-before-solar check. No 30% credit applies to either: Section 25D ended for expenditures after December 31, 2025.

Fewer products, fewer installers

The shingle market is small and has just lost its best-known product. Tesla told certified installers in August 2026 that it would stop taking Solar Roof orders and supply only conventional panels, according to Electrek's reporting summarised by GIGAZINE.

That leaves a short list of nailable products such as GAF's, installed by trained roofers. Fewer installers means fewer competing quotes, and a long-term question worth asking: who will service a discontinued product in year 15? See Tesla Solar Roof vs panels.

Which to choose if…

  1. 1
Your roof has 10+ years of life left

Panels. There is no reason to replace a working roof to get a lower-output product.

  2. 2
Your roof needs replacing now and roof space is ample

Get both quoted: a shingle roof, and a new roof plus panels. Compare total price and kWh per year, not looks.

  3. 3
Roof space is tight or shaded

Panels. Their higher output per square foot matters most when area is the limit.

  4. 4
An HOA or historic district restricts visible panels

Shingles may be the only route; check the rules first, and see solar access rights by state.

Questions

Are solar shingles cheaper than solar panels?
No. A shingle system includes a roof, so it costs more than panels on an existing roof. Against a new roof plus panels the gap narrows; get both quoted for your house.
Do solar shingles produce as much as panels?
Not per square foot. On the makers’ data sheets a GAF Timberline Solar shingle rates about 14 W per square foot of exposed shingle against about 22 W for a 470 W panel, by our calculation.
Do solar shingles count as a roof?
GAF’s product is UL-listed as a building-integrated roof covering with a Class A fire rating, so it is installed as part of the roof rather than on top of it.
Can I still buy a Tesla Solar Roof?
Reports from August 2026 say Tesla stopped accepting new Solar Roof orders and now supplies only conventional panels.
