Tesla Solar Roof vs Solar Panels: Which Is Right for Your Home

Quick answer

Tesla Solar Roof vs Solar Panels comes down to upfront cost, lifetime savings and how long you plan to stay in the home; here is each factor side by side.

As of August 2026 the choice has mostly been made for you: Tesla told its certified installers it would stop accepting Solar Roof orders and supply only conventional panels, according to Electrek's reporting.

If you are shopping now, compare a new conventional roof plus panels against panels on your existing roof. If you already own a Solar Roof, the questions are service and repair, not purchase.

Order status and reasons: GIGAZINE (August 24, 2026) summarising Electrek’s August 20, 2026 report. Prices: the cost cells above.

Why the two prices are far apart

The Solar Roof range above is not the price of solar. It is the price of replacing the entire roof with glass and steel tiles, some of them active.

That is why it sits far above a panel system, and why the honest comparison was always a Solar Roof against a conventional reroof plus panels (see solar and roof replacement cost).

Treat the Solar Roof figures as the last prices published before Tesla stopped selling it.

GIGAZINE, summarising Electrek, reports that contract prices had nearly doubled by 2021 as installation costs exceeded early estimates, and that Tesla concluded the product was not profitable.

Many published quotes bundled Powerwalls, so strip storage out before comparing anything; Powerwall 3 vs Enphase IQ 5P covers the battery side.

Savings over 25 years

On savings alone, panels were the stronger choice even before the product ended. A panel system costs a fraction as much for the same kilowatts, so it recovers its price far sooner.

The Solar Roof’s case rested on the roof it replaced: if you needed a new roof and wanted an unbroken look, part of the price was a roof you would have bought anyway.

A discontinued product adds a long-run risk. A 25-year saving assumes the array keeps producing, which assumes someone can repair a failed tile, a cracked glass surface or a roof leak in year 12.

Only Tesla-certified crews ever worked on these roofs. Sources disagree on what happens to support: one installer blog says existing warranties remain valid, while other coverage notes Tesla has not said.

We found no Tesla statement to settle it. Model the panel path with the payback calculator; no 30% credit applies (Section 25D ended December 31, 2025).

If you already own a Tesla Solar Roof

  1. 1
    Find your warranty documents now

Keep the roofing and power warranties, your system serial numbers and the installer’s name with the house papers.

  2. 2
Ask Tesla in writing who services your roof

Request the answer by email so it can be shown to a future buyer.

  3. 3
Know what to do about a leak or fault

See roof leak after solar and solar repair costs.

If you are buying a house that has a Tesla Solar Roof

  1. 1
Ask the seller for the warranty and the transfer paperwork

NRG Clean Power, a California installer, reads Tesla’s warranty as transferring to later owners who show proof of ownership. Get the document itself, not a summary.

  2. 2
Check whether the system is owned outright

If it was financed, a fixture filing may need to be paid off or subordinated before closing; see the UCC-1 filing on your solar.

  3. 3
    Get a production history

Twelve months of monitoring data shows whether the active tiles are performing. A sudden drop on one roof plane can point to a failed section.

  4. 4
Have the roof inspected like any roof

Look for leaks and damaged tiles. Ask the inspector whether replacement tiles can be sourced, given the product is no longer sold.

  5. 5
Price the risk into your offer

A roof that only one company could repair, and that company no longer sells it, is a real consideration. Treat it as you would any specialist roof.

Which to choose if…

  1. 1
You were quoted a Solar Roof but have not installed

Ask in writing whether the order will be fulfilled. If not, get quotes for a new conventional roof plus panels.

  2. 2
    Your roof is fine

Panels on the existing roof. It was always the cheaper path to the same electricity.

  3. 3
You want an integrated look on a new roof

Questions

Is the Tesla Solar Roof discontinued?
Electrek reported on August 20, 2026 that Tesla told certified installers it would stop accepting Solar Roof orders and supply only conventional panels; tesla.com/solarroof began redirecting to the solar panel page.
Was a Tesla Solar Roof cheaper than panels?
No. It replaced the whole roof, so it cost far more than panels on an existing roof. It was closer in price only to a new conventional roof plus panels.
Will Tesla still repair existing Solar Roofs?
We could not find a Tesla statement on this. Ask Tesla in writing and keep the answer with your warranty documents.
