The short answer

Cost to Add Battery to Solar System depends mainly on the battery, how it couples to your existing inverter and the work at your panel, and this page gives the installed range from dated, sourced quotes. Across 12 published, dated sources retrieved October 21, 2026, the typical installed range is $10,000–$18,000 before incentives.

No 30% federal credit applies to a system a homeowner buys: Section 25D ended for expenditures after December 31, 2025 (what changed). Some utilities still pay storage rebates; check solar incentives.

What moves the cost of a battery retrofit

Coupling decides most of the retrofit cost. Most existing systems take an AC-coupled battery, which carries its own inverter and connects at the panel without touching the solar side.

Replacing the existing inverter with a hybrid unit to DC-couple a battery costs more and makes sense mainly when the old inverter is near the end of its life (inverter replacement cost).

Your net-metering terms matter too. Some utilities treat a changed system as a new application; a battery retrofit may need a fresh interconnection review, and in a few places it can move the system onto newer, less generous export rules. Ask the installer and check with the utility before you sign.

If the original installer has left the market, a new installer may need to inspect and take on parts of the existing system first (when your installer is gone).

How to check a quote

  1. 1
Ask whether net metering terms change

Get the utility’s answer in writing before the battery goes in.

  2. 2
Confirm warranty effects on the existing system

Ask whether work on the old equipment affects its manufacturer or workmanship warranty.

  3. 3
    Price partial and whole-home backup

See whole home backup for why the gap is large.

Questions

How much does it cost to add a battery to an existing solar system?
$10,000–$18,000 before incentives across 12 published sources retrieved October 21, 2026.
Can any solar system take a battery?
Nearly any grid-tied system can take an AC-coupled battery. The questions are panel space, utility rules and whether your inverter is worth keeping.
Will adding a battery affect my net metering?
It can. Utilities differ: some treat a battery addition as a modification needing review. Check before you sign.
